    Update 6:

As you may have noticed, I haven’t sent an update in quite some time.  I kept meaning to but just didn’t know what to say.  My last few months at the mission were very interesting indeed.

Both of my little boys started coming to the day home full time in January.  It was a bit of an adjustment for all of us.  I had to get used to sharing them with a visitor and they had to get used to sharing me with each other.  They both continued to learn and blossom in the program.  And, of course, they continued to be the cutest things ever.

In March, I got to visit Janelle for a week in Oaxaca.  I went with Anna, another girl from the day home.  It was a much-needed break for us and we loved being there.  Janelle and Jill were great hosts and we loved getting to know Selina—the baby girl that lives with them.  The weather was much nicer in Oaxaca and we got to escape some of the day-to-day drama of the Baja mission.

During my trip to Oaxaca, it became very clear to me that the Baja mission was not going to be a long-term thing for me.  I decided during my week away that I would accept a job at Elim that would allow me to start teaching in June.  When I returned to the Baja, I informed my supervisors that I would be leaving at the end of May.  I had absolute peace about this decision and was looking forward to returning to Elim.

Through a variety of circumstances, I ended up leaving Mexico on April 4th with my friend Anna.  We spent about a week on the road traveling Rte 66.  We had tons of fun and got to go through reverse culture shock together.  (The grocery stores are so clean!)

Currently, I am in Chicago.  I’m catching up with some friends and visiting Elim.  I’m excited about returning to my life here but still missing Mexico terribly.  Early next week, I’ll drive to New York to spend some time with my family until I return to Chicago in June.  I’ll be doing some work for my dad and may look into subbing to keep myself busy.

It’s been a very abrupt transition so I’m still trying to process through all of it.  I know that I needed to leave when I did but I’m not ready to be completely done with Mexico.  I miss my kids and my friends more than I can say.  I guess I’ll just wait and see what the future holds.

    Prayer Requests:

    1. Please pray for the mission.  They are going through some changes down there and there is a lot of healing that needs to happen.
    2. Pray for Anna and I as we try to figure out our futures and as we deal with this transition.  I’m glad to have her to go through it with!
    3. Pray that I can continue to process the things that I have learned and grow from these difficult experiences.

    Praises:

    1.      Necessary changes are happening at the mission.

    2.      We made it safely across the country.

    3.      I have great friends and family all over the world that have helped me through these times.

  • Over the years, I have fallen victim to the vicious nap cycle.  You know, where you take a nap in the afternoon because you are tired and then you can't fall asleep at night.  Then, because you didn't sleep at night, you have to take another nap.  Vicious cycle that never ends.

Well, this week, I have found, what I think, is a worse cycle.  On Sunday, I went to bed early because I was so tired.  The problem with that is that I woke up early on Monday morning.  Then, I was so tired Monday night from getting up so early that I went to bed early and once again woke up early.  Ugh.  So annoying!  So, right now, I am trying to keep myself up until a respectable hour so that I can sleep in the morning.  I need to sleep well tonight so I won't get to sleep at all tomorrow night.  I'll be on a plane from midnight until 5am and then again from 10am to 11am.

I don't think my sleeping has been helped at all by the fact that my mind starts spinning and analyzing as soon as I wake up these days.

  • I started teaching English a couple of weeks ago and I really love it.  I have to try really hard not to laugh at the kids but the things they say are just so cute.  (In all fairness, they laugh at my Spanish sometimes.)  Here are a couple of my favorite stories from this week.

The kids really wanted to learn the animals.  I don't think it's that useful right now but it's what they wanted to learn.  Everytime I show a picture of a bear, one of the girls yells "BEER!" very enthusiastically.  I have explained the difference between bear and beer but she keeps forgetting.

Another one of the girls came up to me after class and said "How do you say poopy?"  I told her what it was in Spanish.  She said "No.  Poopy."  I said it again in Spanish.  She said "No.  Un perrito chicito. (A little dog.)  Ahhh....Puppy!

  • One of the only things to do around here on the weekends is go to Globos.  It is essentially a really big flea market.  They always have several booths of pirated DVDs there.  I've always wondered how they get away with that.  They are right there in the open and no one seems to care that they are illegal.

We went on Saturday and had a really good time.  One of my favorite moment came as we walked around a corner and saw people frantically running around and pulling down movies and shoving them in boxes.  People were literally panicking and packing things up and running them out to cars and shoving them in storage units.  Once the had all the contraband packed up and hidden, they tried to rearrange the 2 tvs and 6 dvd players that they had to make it look like a legitimate booth.  The best part was that there were about 30 people standing around watching.  They must have found out that a raid was coming or something.  When we walked around later, we noticed that the 3 booths that usually sell pirated DVDs were all empty.

My other favorite moment came later.  April and I were looking through bins and bins of garbage.  We found some people's old photo albums with pictures still in them.  It made us both very sad since we both greatly value our photos.  Then, we found a journal that was in English.  I started to flip through it when a note fell out.  Of course, I had to read it.  Then I read a few parts to April.  It was from a girl to a guy named Alex.  It basically listed the reasons that she loved him and then said that she was sure he loved her too.  She told him that she would wait while he slept with a 100 girls while he was trying to figure out what his real feelings for her were since she trusted God would put them together eventually.  While we were laughing and reading it, this guy came up and started giving us a hard time about reading it.  I told him it was quite interesting and he said he imagined it was.  He said he wished he spoke more English so he could understand things like that.  April and I were both so embarrased that we had got caught reading this journal that we couldn't stop giggling.  I really hope none of my journals ever end up in a flea market somewhere.

About Me

  • I taught special education in Chicago for the last 8 years. In August, 2008, I began a one-year stay in Mexico where I continue to work with special needs kids. While I know this is where my heart is and where God has called me, I also know that I will miss all my wonderful friends and family.
